Many nonprofits focus heavily on donor acquisition, but the real key to sustainable fundraising success is donor retention. Retaining a donor costs significantly less than acquiring a new one, yet many organizations unintentionally neglect donor relationships between fundraising campaigns.

Why Donor Retention Matters

A 2024 Fundraising Effectiveness Project report found that the average first-time donor retention rate is just 20%, while repeat donors are 60% more likely to give again. In other words, securing a second donation dramatically increases the likelihood of long-term donor engagement and increased lifetime giving.

Strategies to Strengthen Donor Relationships

Move Beyond Transactional Giving Instead of only reaching out when asking for funds, focus on engagement touchpoints that add value. These include:

  • Impact updates: Show donors how their gifts are making a difference.

  • Personalized thank-you messages: Handwritten notes or short videos stand out.

  • Exclusive behind-the-scenes content: Give donors a glimpse into your nonprofit’s day-to-day work.

Create Two-Way Communication Donors don’t just want to give—they want to feel heard and valued. Open up opportunities for feedback through surveys, donor roundtables, or one-on-one conversations. Engagement strengthens trust and deepens commitment.

Recognize Donors in Meaningful Ways Recognition shouldn’t just be reserved for major gifts. Small gestures like featuring a donor in your newsletter, inviting them to a volunteer day, or celebrating donor anniversaries can reinforce their connection to your mission.

The Long-Term Impact

When donors feel valued, they are more likely to increase their giving, spread the word about your mission, and become lifelong advocates for your nonprofit.

Donor relationships are built over time, not just at fundraising moments. If your organization is looking for ways to strengthen engagement and increase retention, we’d be happy to share referrals and connections  on making donor stewardship a natural part of your fundraising strategy.
